Looking for something more specific? See open and upright MRI if you are claustrophobic or need to be scanned standing or sitting, or full body MRI to understand what a whole-body scan can and cannot show.

Do you need a referral?

Scans that use X-rays (CT, X-ray, DEXA and mammography) are covered by the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017. A referrer has to request the scan and it has to be justified before it goes ahead, so a clinic can decline a scan that is not justified. The referrer does not have to be your GP: some private clinics have a doctor who can review your request.

MRI and ultrasound do not use ionising radiation, so many clinics accept a self-referral. Some still ask for a referral for certain scans, and a clinic may suggest you speak to your GP first if a scan is not the right next step.

How to choose a London provider

  • Location and travel. London providers range from central clinics to hospitals in outer boroughs. Check how long the journey will take you.
  • The scanner. For MRI, ask about the scanner type, for example a wide-bore, open or upright scanner if you are claustrophobic.
  • What is included. Check whether a radiologist's report and a consultation to explain the results are included.
  • Appointments. Ask how soon the clinic can see you and how long the report usually takes.
  • Registration. Check the clinic is registered with the Care Quality Commission.

Common questions

Can I get a private scan in London without a GP referral?

It depends on the scan. MRI and ultrasound do not use ionising radiation, so many clinics accept a self-referral, although some ask for a referral. CT, X-ray, DEXA and mammograms use X-rays, so under the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017 they need a referrer and must be justified. The referrer does not have to be your GP: some clinics have a doctor who can review your request.

Does FindScan carry out the scan?

No. FindScan is a comparison service, not a healthcare provider. The clinic carries out your scan, and a qualified clinician reports it.

How quickly can I get a private scan in London?

It depends on the clinic and the scan. When you send an enquiry, the clinic tells you its next available appointments.

How do I check a London clinic is registered?

Clinics in England that carry out diagnostic imaging should be registered with the Care Quality Commission (CQC). You can search for a clinic on the CQC website to see its registration and latest inspection report.
